How can God die?

Question:

What if a Muslim asks you, can God die? Jesus died and was resurrected, just like the myths of the Greeks, India, Roman, and the dark ages. What will you say?

Answer:

The ancient myths took their inspiration from the seasons. They saw the cycles of winter and spring and created myths to explain what they saw. Their characters lived, died, and came to life again only to die again. The Bible reveals that Jesus was resurrected to never die again. "Knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more" (Romans 6:9). Death no longer has dominion over Him. Because of that, he is able to give eternal life to others as well.

  • "And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand" (John 10:28).
  • "But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you" (Romans 8:11).

The story of Jesus is nothing like ancient myths. See: Myth or History?

In regards to being able to die, it is true that God is an eternal Spirit, but what is being overlooked is that men have both flesh and spirit. "Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" (I Thessalonians 5:23). Jesus was God, came in the flesh. As a Spirit, he lives, but his flesh died on the cross -- something the Muslims deny despite the biblical evidence of eye-witness accounts.
