What should I do? My mom and I are always arguing

Question:

I'm 23 years years old and a single mom. My mom has helped me out a lot financially, but she can be confrontational and a bit abusive in her speech. I always argue with her over things, and we never can seem to get along for very long. My mom always points out what I'm doing wrong and things I'm failing to do. It seems that as I grow closer to God the more we fight. What is your advice?

Answer:

Not knowing the situation, I cannot tell you whether your mother is correct and you don't want to believe it or whether your mother is wrong about her conclusions.

"Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a just man, and he will increase in learning" (Proverbs 9:8-9).

"A wise son heeds his father's instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke" (Proverbs 13:1).

"Poverty and shame will come to him who disdains correction, but he who regards a rebuke will be honored" (Proverbs 13:18).

"He who disdains instruction despises his own soul, but he who heeds rebuke gets understanding" (Proverbs 15:32).

"Rebuke is more effective for a wise man than a hundred blows on a fool" (Proverbs 17:10).

If you find living with your mother intolerable, then the obvious solution for an adult is to move out into your own home.
