It is so hard to escape the sin in the world

Question:

Hello there.

I have just gotten back into church again and I have been studying the Bible. Almost everything I watch has cuss words in them. I want to buy a language blocker for all my streaming services. It will block out bad language and nudity. Will that still be wrong?

Maybe I’m just overthinking. I am surrounded by sin every day, I know I can’t escape it but it’s discouraging sometimes.

Answer:

"I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people; I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world" (I Corinthians 5:9-10).

I agree that it is hard. More than one person has noted that mankind in general seems to be rushing toward being like the world before the flood. "Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart" (Genesis 6:5-6). Fortunately, we haven't reached that level of wickedness yet.

As Paul pointed out, we can't avoid the wicked in the world. Otherwise, how would we be able to teach them to change? But we can fight against letting their behaviors influence us. Filters definitely help. No filter is perfect but if it cuts down on what you see or hear, then it will help. Personally, I don't watch much. Reading gives me more control over what I take in, but it can be difficult to find decent books at times.

The important point is that you are making the effort. "Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called" (I Timothy 6:12).
