My Voice

by Chadwick Brewer

Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:19-20).

Have you ever wondered why God never asked us to have choirs in our congregations? Or have you ever wished that we were commanded to have musical instruments in our worship?

My wife and I spent a day visiting old cathedrals to take some photos. When we entered one old beautiful building, the organist was practicing, and for the first time I finally truly understood the allure. The scenery was amazing, and the music was some of the most amazing sounds I’ve ever heard. Choirs sound great, and instrumental music can be very moving.

God did not ask for choirs or instruments. He asked for me to sing. There is one simple reason for this: God wants to hear my voice in praise to Him. He gave me my voice, and He wants to hear it. We like and are entertained by choirs and instruments. God loves me and wants to hear me extoll His name, and that is far more beautiful and moving than any choir or instrument.
