I don’t think the Lord cares very much that I sleep with my boyfriend

Question:

I am a born again Christian and I sleep with my boyfriend.  Do not think the Lord cares very much about this as we are deeply in love so it can never be wrong to make love.

Jesus had very very little to say about sex but far more about being rich. To me, it's a great shame that the Christian church is so worried about young people sleeping together and is not worried that 35,000 died in the world today. It's so sad that the church has gone away from the real teaching of Jesus. Let's do something about the children of the world and not keep going on about sex.

Answer:

"Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?" (James 4:11-12).

The shame isn't that churches are teaching Christ's doctrine. The shame is that foolish young people, such as yourself, sit in judgment over what should or should not be taught. You claim to be a Christian but in the same breath are happy to announce that you ignore the teachings of Christ. Which is it to be? "Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me" (John 14:23-24).

In case you have overlooked it, Paul taught Christ's words. "But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ" (Galatians 1:11-12). And Paul made it very clear that Christians cannot be saved when they commit sexual sins.

"Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience" (Ephesians 5:1-5).

"Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God" (I Corinthians 6:9-10).

You make judgments on Jesus' teaching, claiming that something which is mentioned a few times can be ignored. But Jesus did not teach this. It is something you made up to make yourself feel better about your disobedience. Nor are you correct in justifying your sin because you claim to love the person with whom you are sinning. "And why not say, "Let us do evil that good may come"? --as we are slanderously reported and as some affirm that we say. Their condemnation is just" (Romans 3:8).

Being a Christian means leaving the sins of the world behind, not wallowing in them. "And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts" (Romans 13:11-14).

Unlike you, I'm not afraid to teach all of Christ's words. That includes Jesus' own words: "And He said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death" (Revelation 21:6-8).

So which are you going to choose: temporary pleasures which lead to heartache and eventually God's wrath and a place in hell, or lasting love which comes from being committed to Jesus and his laws?

Question:

Thank you for your email and for taking the time to write to me. But I feel you missed the point I was trying to make which was, why is the Christian church is so hung up on young people's sex lives. Why is the church not doing something about the children all over the world dying from AIDS? We have a very rich church in a very poor world. All the church is worried about is if young people make love before they get married. Remember the church over the last two hundred years had changed its mind many times on just what is a sin. Six hundred years ago it was a sin to lend money and charge interest. Fifty years ago it was a sin to take your own life and now you can remarry after you have been divorced.

Let me people this way if Jesus was walking down the street on a Sunday morning looking for somewhere to worship his Father I think he would walk past the church with big cars outside and well-dressed people going and find a church where young people were working with the poor, homeless, etc. even if they were having sex.

I still feel what matters to the Lord is children, the poor, etc. and not young people in love.

Answer:

You express a lot of feelings without bothering to know the Lord. You won't get to heaven feeling your way there. "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it" (Matthew 7:13-14). In case you didn't recognize it, those were Jesus' own words.

You are wrong about Jesus' concerns about sin. Even in the case of the woman caught in adultery, which many people love to cite, Jesus concluded by telling the woman, "go and sin no more" (John 8:11). Jesus came to free people from sin, not to give them the freedom to wallow in its filth. "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?" (Romans 6:1-2).

You claim to be worried about children with AIDS. I just checked and the latest statistics claim that 98% of the AIDS cases come from promiscuous sex in this country. That same promiscuous sex that leads children to be born without a mother and father to care for them. The remaining 2% of the cases come from tainted blood supplies, but the supplies are tainted because of people having promiscuous sex. Thus churches teaching that sex belongs only in marriage are doing something about the problem. They are teaching morality that has the benefit of stopping the spread of a deadly disease.

While those already contaminated by the disease are sad cases, especially the children who were innocent of their parent's sins, the only thing churches can do for them is to teach people to be kind and caring to their fellow men (Galatians 6:10). It is science, not churches, which must search out a cure for this evil that men have unleashed on themselves.

Yes, there are denominations that have corrupted the teachings found in the Bible, but it doesn't mean truth has changed. "I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:6-9). There has been no change regarding what is a sin. People, like yourself, choose to ignore various sins, but it doesn't mean that Christians, like myself, have stopped teaching about sin and its dangers. Suicide is still a sin. Divorce and remarriage is still a sin if the divorce isn't because of fornication. Taking advantage of the poor by charging excessive interest is still a sin. All of which, by the way, you will find taught on this web site.

Unlike you, I am not stuck on one topic. I teach on a very wide range of topics, of which explaining why sex outside of marriage is wrong is just one. It is hilarious, as well, to be accused of being a part of a wealthy church. You obviously have not had much contact with members of the churches of Christ.
