Here Is What the Spirit Told Me
by Terry Wane Benton
Mormons have told me that if I pray for Spirit guidance, the Spirit will make it clear that the Book of Mormon is from God. Well, I prayed that God would make it clear to me whether the Bible is His complete revelation or if the Book of Mormon is indeed “another Testament of Jesus Christ” as they claim, and here is what the Spirit told me:
- The Spirit said clearly that the eye-witness apostles of Jesus were to be guided into all truth (John 16:13), and the Spirit said that they preached “the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27).
- The Spirit told me that if any man or angel preaches any other gospel than those apostles preached (Galatians 1:6-10), “let him be accursed.”
- The Spirit told me to “test all things” (I Thessalonians 5:21) and told me to “try the spirits because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (I John 4:1f).
The Spirit led me to these conclusions:
- The truth was complete in the first century,
- nothing pertaining to the Book of Mormon was given to the apostles, and therefore, they said nothing about it;
- people of all nations were saved without the Book of Mormon for centuries;
- the whole counsel of God was without the Book of Mormon.
Thus, the Spirit told me to let those who peddle the Book of Mormon be accursed.
The Spirit also told me to “mark those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned and avoid them” (Romans 16:17). Nobody learned the Book of Mormon in the first century.
The Spirit also told me that “whoever goes onward and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God” (II John 9-10). The doctrine of Christ did not include the Book of Mormon.
The Spirit told me to love and care for people who have been deceived but not to encourage them to continue in their error and deception (Jude 22-23) and, if possible, try to snatch them out of the fire. But the Spirit also told me that I can’t save everyone because some are like swine who have no appreciation for truth, and you might be wasting time with some, and that would be like “casting pearls before swine” (Matthew 7:6).
The Spirit told me to recognize that some people are not conditioned to be honest with the word, and they “handle the word deceitfully” (II Corinthians 4:2-4) and that Satan has blinded people. Sometimes, you cannot persuade them to believe the truth because they prefer a “strong delusion” over the truth (II Thessalonians 2:11-12).
The Spirit told me that many will say “God told me” when He had not (Ezekiel 13:7) and that they speak from their own hearts' vain imaginations.
So, the Spirit told me to search the Scriptures to find out what is so (Acts 17:11) and test all things by the complete Scriptures (II Tim.3:16,17) that were “once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3-4) in the first century. I intend to hear what the Spirit says to all the churches from the first century until now.
Are you listening to the Spirit?
