Does God expect women to stay at home?

Question:

Hi Jeff,

I wanted to ask you a question about Christian women working. Do you believe the scriptures expect a woman to stay at home? I read Proverbs 31 and II Timothy 5 and they seem almost contradictory in the sense the woman works and sells and profits for her family and in the New Testament it says for them to be homemakers. I would appreciate your perspective on the matter.

Answer:

God gave the duty of managing the home to the woman. It doesn't restrict her from working at a job. We too often see these as mutually exclusive conditions. But at the same time, a woman should not get so wrapped up in earning money that she is unable to do her tasks. See Housekeeper. The same goes for men as well. Their primary duty is seeing that the family has sufficient income, but that isn't all that God expects of them.
