Did God send my boyfriend a sign that we should break up?

Question:

Hi there,

Recently at church, I met this man who right from the start was different from all the other guys I know. He had a deep passion for Christ and was so excited about getting to know him more. His excitement was contagious and I found that through hanging out with him and talking to him, I too grew in my relationship with the Lord. We stated from the start that we wanted to be friends because we felt that was the best grounding for a relationship.

He shared that he had very recently broken up with his ex-girlfriend of over three. That served as a bit of a shock to me, but I felt that it wasn't an issue because we were just friends. The more I got to know him, the more compatible we seemed, in our views, morals, desire for Christ, and hopes to fulfill His mission. We can talk for days on end without getting tired of each other.

It soon got to the point where we were speaking most of the day via messaging or phone calls and seeing very regularly too. After a couple of weeks of going on like this, spending time getting to know each other he told me that he had prayed and asked God, "If she is meant to be my wife then make it apparent to me". The next day we hung out with a group and while there were lots of positive things that reassured us that we were compatible, he got hurt by something I did and chose that as his sign that we weren't meant to be together.

Now I'm confused and hurt. I can't say anything in my defense if he believes that is what he heard from God but from what I've learned, there is more than just seeing a sign that shows you have heard from God. I'm at a loss as to what to do. Should I cut him off if there is no future or should I re-establish a very basic friendship initially and see where it ends up?

I would really appreciate any help you can provide on this as it is tearing me up. I want to do what is right and what honors God.

Thank you and God bless.

While he sincerely believes he got a message from God, he is merely interpreting normal events to get an answer that he wants. See: Does God send us signs?
