Will God help us if we continue our adultery?

Question:

I have been in a hard marriage for 14 years. I moved back to my home state and started college again. Within a month I was reunited by chance with a man I knew many years ago. He is also married. We have been sleeping together for six months now, and talk every day. He seems to be very godly, walks in faith with the exception of committing adultery.

I am currently getting a divorce. He does not plan at the moment to leave his wife, and tells me to have faith God has a plan for all of us, and for me to be patient, and God will let us know what to do. I don't think what we are doing is right, but I honestly don't want to lose him. I feel as though I have been looking for him all my life.

Help me understand if God really has a hand in this union and whether or not I should continue it. Is there anyway God would want us to keep doing this? He said this is love -- soul love.

Thank you for your help.

Answer:

I can't express how annoying it is to hear an adulteress call her adulterer lover "very godly." He is not even close to righteous, so stop pretending to be something you are not. "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God" (I Corinthians 6:9-10).

Even if you both get divorced, neither one of you have the right to marry someone else. "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery" (Matthew 19:9).

The very idea that God would help people who are knowingly and actively violating His laws! God is clear that this never happens. "Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear" (Isaiah 59:1-2). If you want help from God, first it cannot be for continuing to break His Laws and, second, you have to be trying to do right and not evil.
