Is it wrong for guys to wear leggings?

Question:

The question I have may seem different, but I need some guidance. I wear leggings as a guy. They are comfortable, and I cover with a long tee when I wear them. It may be odd, but would it be considered sin l? I do not feel shameful about it. Nothing bad is showing.

Answer:

Doublets from the Gothic Period.

They say fashion trends repeat. Leggings were popular for men in the Middle Ages. They were called doublets. What you are describing wearing is much the same.

The basis of judging clothing worn in public is two-fold:

  1. Is it gender distinctive? In other words, if someone just glanced at you, would they have difficulty knowing you were a male because of the style of clothing you chose to wear? "A woman shall not wear man's clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman's clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God" (Deuteronomy 22:5).
  2. Is it modest? In other words, does it attract attention to you because it is sensual, revealing, expensive, or unusual? A Christian should be noticed for his character and not for his clothing (or lack thereof). "Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness" (I Timothy 2:9).

While doublets were popular hundreds of years ago, they are more unusual today. Depending on the cut, they can cause issues by calling attention to a man's private area. Where I find them more useful today is in sports where the uniform is too revealing. Having shorts on top of leggings takes care of the problem of being too revealing and the leggings take care of problems of shorts that reveal too much when in motion.
