How do I handle someone objecting to “Precious Memories”?

Question:

I enjoyed your online message based on the hymn Precious Memories. After having led this hymn in worship for almost sixty years, the preacher where I attend said if Precious Memories was sung, he would walk out and not sing it because it is unbiblical. He says angels do not have specific messages for us about the past, present, or future. I wish I knew what to say that would change his mind because I have no problem with the message of this song.

Answer:

You can always print out a copy of the lesson and hand it to him. Like many, he missed the figurative language in the song and is trying to apply a literal meaning that doesn't fit. The song states in the first line that memories are the unseen angels ("messengers") sent from somewhere. The lesson might not convince him. In this case, the world doesn't end if Precious Memories is not sung when he is present. "Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God; just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, so that they may be saved" (I Corinthians 10:32-33).
