Can you explain more about the need for parental consent before marriage?

Question:

Greetings beloved in the Lord,

I hope you're waxing strong in the vineyard of our Lord and Master.

In Africa, it is cultural to seek parental consent before marriage. But there are instances where this consent is denied for personal and immoral reasons. Can you avail me with materials that one can use to teach a local congregation on parental consent in marriage, as well as situations that warrant a marriage going ahead even without such consent?

I will be glad to hear from you.

Remain blessed.

Answer:

It must be remembered that traditions are not the same as God's laws. Traditions can be nice to keep, but they have little authority. It is God's laws that must be kept.

Children (not adults) are to obey parents "in the Lord" (Ephesians 6:1-2). If a parent's demand conflicts with righteousness, then the Lord is obeyed over the demands of a parent.
