Can I remove sin by myself?

Question:

Hi,

I want to know if I can remove the sin by myself or do I have to trust Jesus in order for this to work?

Answer:

When you sin, you put yourself into debt and into slavery. "Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?" (Romans 6:16).

You cannot get out of that slavery until the debt is paid off, but the price is too high for you to pay. "For the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). In one parable, Jesus compared it to a man who owed 10,000 talents (Matthew 18:24-35). A talent is a unit of weight equally about 75 pounds. 10,000 talents of gold would take about 15,000 years to earn at the normal wage of a man in those days. That is how badly our sins put us in debt -- impossible to pay off.

Since all men sin (Romans 3:23), no one else can pay that debt for you either because they too are stuck in the slavery of sin.

What makes Jesus special is that he was without sin. He could pay the debt for you; in fact, with his death, he paid the debt for the whole world. This is the only way out of sin. "Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6).

"O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God --through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Romans 7:24-25).
