Fueling Our Obedience
by Zeke Flores
"You have seen all that Yahweh your God has done ... for Yahweh your God is He who has been fighting for you" (Joshua 23:3).
Joshua's farewell speech starts with an observation: "You have seen." He doesn’t ask Israel to believe blindly; he points to reality, to concrete history. God fought for them, and they’ve watched it.
Joshua uses that history to call them to ongoing faithfulness. If God has fought for them, then abandoning Him for other gods makes no sense. The logic is straightforward: remember what God has done, then live accordingly.
Practically, this pushes us to connect memory with obedience. If we’ve seen God’s work –His provision, conviction, guidance– then drifting into compromise isn’t just wrong; it’s irrational.
Joshua 23 reminds us that spiritual exhortation doesn’t need emotional language; it needs clear reasoning rooted in what God has already done.
God’s past actions fuel our present obedience.
