Are all denominations false?

Question:

Are all denominations false? Did Jesus ever command anyone to create denominations? To me, it seems that denominations are man-made religions, not something the Lord initiated. I don’t believe God leads people to follow a particular denomination or to find their identity in one. Many people proudly call themselves Pentecostal, Baptist, Methodist, and so on, but they don’t actually live for Jesus.

Answer:

"Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment" (I Corinthians 1:10).

By definition, a denomination is a division. Every denomination exists because it teaches things differently from other denominations. These differences are typically recorded in a creed or statement of faith that defines how this denomination differs from the rest. See Why Do We Need Church Creeds? As you noted, these are the works of men and not God. There is only one truth and one church (Ephesians 4:4-6). Anything different from what the Bible teaches cannot be true since it is the truth (John 17:17), and truth is exclusive.

None of it is necessary. What we all need to do is go back to what God said. See We Are Simply Christians Without Being Members of Any Denomination. You Can Be Too!
