You Shall Not Act Like This Toward the Lord Your God
by Zeke Flores
"You shall not act like this toward Yahweh your God" (Deuteronomy 12:4).
Deuteronomy 12 focuses on worship, but not vaguely. In Deuteronomy 12:4, Moses is referring to the casual, anything-goes worship practices of the surrounding nations. Israel wasn’t supposed to improvise their own version of worship; God set the terms.
This chapter reminds us that worship isn’t about personal preference; it’s about responding to God the way He actually asks. Israel had to learn that worship wasn’t a cultural activity; it was a covenant responsibility. They were to worship where God chose, not wherever felt convenient.
We live in a time where convenience shapes almost everything. But worship isn’t built around convenience; it’s built around obedience. Deuteronomy 12 pushes us to ask whether our approach to God is shaped more by what’s easy or by what’s faithful.
Take inventory of your rhythms, whether they’re intentional or accidental, because Moses’ point is simple: Worship God on His terms, not yours.
