You only oppose homosexuality out of ignorance

Question:

I'm sorry if I may sound a bit rash, but what is wrong with you people?  I am deeply concerned on your standpoints of the Scripture and the answers you are giving people.  We are all made in our own unique way, and the Lord forgives us for our imperfections and sins. If one is born as a homosexual, are they doomed to burn in the lake of fire?  And if two people feel a strong connection of love, and attraction to each other, and they allow it to escalate to sex, they are sinners and scum for love?  If they had no other partner for the rest of their lives and made love because it made them both feel warm and happy, and got married afterward, they are sentenced to Hell?  Your values and thoughts desperately need to be rearranged. People like you are examples of how ignorance is spread. It is the same ignorance that sparked wars on religion, race, and ethnicity. The same ignorance that drives extremists to attack the innocent. Your ignorance and self-righteous disgust me, and I hope you change your view.  I am sure I will receive plenty of hateful and mocking criticism feedback from you, but my view is not shaken easily.

Answer:

I don't know why I should respond in kind to your note. It isn't the Christian way of handling disagreements (II Timothy 2:23-26).

Either a person believes what God taught in His Scriptures or he rejects them. Homosexuality is defined to be a sin in the Scriptures. For a list of verses, see Notes on Homosexuality. The Bible also condemns sex outside of a marriage covenant between a man and a woman. See Notes on Sex for a list of those terms and the verses where they can be found. These are simple facts. You can try to argue against them but it would just illustrate that you are refusing to see the obvious. A more honest approach is to just say you don't agree with what the Bible teaches.

The problem seems to be that you confuse the physical act of sex with love. It is true that a husband and wife who are in love will have sex, but it is not necessarily true that two people who are having sex are in love. Love by its nature wants the best for the other person, which would include his spiritual well-being. "Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails" (I Corinthians 13:4-8). Typically those involved in sexual sin are focused on their own immediate gratification.

The reason homosexuality and other sexual sins are condemned is that they cause harm. See Don't you dare change my mind, but why is homosexuality bad? for a sample of the problems.

The idea that I can sin and God will forgive me anyway is false because it doesn't require repentance (a change of mind and action regarding the sin) to take place. "I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish" (Luke 13:3). Being a Christian is about opposing sin not excusing it. "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?" (Romans 6:1-2).

The claim that people are born homosexual is popularly repeated by people who have not spent much time considering the issue, but the claim remains unproven. There have been studies that at best claim there might be a tendency toward homosexuality based on genetics, but each study has failed the test of repeatability or has been shown to have flaws in their methods. In fact, there are some studies that show that homosexuality cannot be genetic. See: Study of Identical Twins Show Homosexuality Is Not Genetic for an example.

I'm sorry that you can't conceive of people who logically oppose your particular choice of sin, but this has been going on for thousands of years, and it won't stop just because of your scoffing. I will continue to show people how they can leave sin behind and live righteously. "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God" (I Corinthians 6:9-11).
