Where did Job say he was pure, without transgression, and innocent?

Question:

Regarding Job 33:8-9: Could you point out in Scripture where Job said this? I've searched verse by verse and can't find it.

Thank you.

Answer:

"Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the sound of your words: 'I am pure, without transgression; I am innocent and there is no guilt in me. Behold, He invents pretexts against me; He counts me as His enemy. He puts my feet in the stocks; He watches all my paths.' Behold, let me tell you, you are not right in this, for God is greater than man. Why do you complain against Him that He does not give an account of all His doings?" (Job 33:8-13).

Job doesn't use the exact words, but they are what is implied by what Job did say. Job, in his declaration of innocence in the face of the accusations of his friends, went too far in pressing his case.

"For He bruises me with a tempest and multiplies my wounds without cause" (Job 9:17).

"If the scourge kills suddenly, He mocks the despair of the innocent" (Job 9:23).

"According to Your knowledge I am indeed not guilty, yet there is no deliverance from Your hand" (Job 10:7).

"Although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure" (Job 16:17).

"The upright will be appalled at this, and the innocent will stir up himself against the godless" (Job 17:8).

"But He knows the way I take; When He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold. My foot has held fast to His path; I have kept His way and not turned aside. I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food" (Job 23:10-12).

"I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go. My heart does not reproach any of my days" (Job 27:6).

"I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a turban" (Job 29:14).

While probably not Job's intention, Elihu is right in saying that Job said he was pure (Job 16:17), without transgression (Job 23:10-12), innocent (Job 9:17,23; 17:8), and that there was no guilt in him (Job 10:7; 27:6).

What follows are more direct quotes of Job. Most come from Job 13:24-27, though similar ideas are repeated in other places.

  • "He invents pretexts against me"
    • "If I am wicked, woe to me! And if I am righteous, I dare not lift up my head. I am sated with disgrace and conscious of my misery. Should my head be lifted up, You would hunt me like a lion; and again You would show Your power against me. You renew Your witnesses against me and increase Your anger toward me; hardship after hardship is with me." (Job 10:15-17).
    • "For You write bitter things against me and make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth." (Job 13:26).
  • "He counts me as an enemy"
    • "Why do You hide Your face and consider me Your enemy?" (Job 13:24).
    • "He has also kindled His anger against me and considered me as His enemy" (Job 19:11).
  • "He puts my feet in the stocks"
    • "You put my feet in the stocks and watch all my paths; You set a limit for the soles of my feet" (Job 13:27).
  • "He watches all my paths"
    • "Will You cause a driven leaf to tremble? Or will You pursue the dry chaff?" (Job 13:25).
    • "You put my feet in the stocks and watch all my paths; You set a limit for the soles of my feet" (Job 13:27).
    • "His anger has torn me and hunted me down, He has gnashed at me with His teeth; my adversary glares at me" (Job 16:9).
    • "Does He not see my ways and number all my steps?" (Job 31:4).

Quotes do not have to be word for word. If the thought is expressed or can be derived from what a person said, then it can be counted as if he said it.
