What does personal accountability mean?

Question:

What does the term personal accountability mean?

Answer:

The phrase is not used in the Bible, but we sometimes speak about our personal accountability before God. By this, we are referring to the fact that each one of us must give an account to God regarding the things we personally have done. "So then each of us shall give account of himself to God" (Romans 14:12).

In other words, when I face God in judgment I will be judged according to the things that I have done. I cannot blame my neighbor for why I sinned, nor can I take credit for the good things my neighbor might have done. "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad" (II Corinthians 5:10).
