What are watchmen?

Question:

Hello Mr. Jeffrey,

I have a question: In Psalms 130:1-8, "My soul waits for the Lord more than the watchmen for the morning; indeed, more than the watchmen for the morning." Who are these watchmen? What are they doing?

Answer:

Watchmen were a part of a city's guard. They would patrol the city walls to look for potential threats. "Now David was sitting between the two gates. And the watchman went up to the roof over the gate, to the wall, lifted his eyes and looked, and there was a man, running alone" (II Samuel 18:24). Being on night duty is a boring job, but also difficult because the darkness can hide many threats. The coming morning heralds the end of a shift.
