The Christian’s Sabbath

Some people teach that the Ten Commandments are a set of permanent laws established by God at the creation of the world. They believe that Christians are still supposed to be in obedience to these laws, including the law of observing the Sabbath on the seventh day of the week. What they fail to notice is that the Ten Commandments were only given to the nation of Israel (Exodus 31:16-17). Even their ancestors did not have a law like the commandments given to them by Moses (Deuteronomy 5:1-5).

Later, the prophet Jeremiah said that new law would be given to God’s people which would not be like the commandments given by Moses on Mount Sinai (Jeremiah 31:31-32). When Jesus died on the cross, the old Law of Moses was removed, including the laws dealing with feasts, new moon celebrations, and Sabbath observances (Colossians 2:11-17).

Many of the ideas contained in the Ten Commandments are still true under the Law of Christ. Acts of lying, murder, stealing, and adultery continue to be wrong – not because the Ten Commandments say they are wrong, but because Christ’s law condemns these practices.
