Mixing the Law of Moses and the Gospel of Christ
by Terry Wane Benton
When brethren at Galatia tried to bring over circumcision from the Law, it was a faith problem. It essentially inferred that the gospel of Jesus is not sufficient without the Law of Moses. It states that Christians are incomplete with Jesus as head over all things to the church (Ephesians 1:19f). It asserts that a Christian must observe all the rituals of the nation of Israel. Paul said by the Spirit that if you pull one thing (circumcision) over from the law and mix it into gospel obedience:
- You become obligated to pull everything over from the Law of Moses, and
- You have fallen from grace (Galatians 5:1-4).
You can't do both the law of Moses and allow Jesus complete headship.
It was a simple point, but most of the religions we see today have pulled one or more items over from the Law of Moses. Thus, all who do so are in the same danger of having perverted the gospel of Christ (Galatians 1:6-10). That is why it is important to share the truth with our neighbors. The truth can set people free (John 8:30-31).
