Is it OK to have a pet snake?
Question:
Is it OK to own a pet snake? Only because you like them as a pet, not because you worship them. I was wondering, since the devil is often depicted as a snake in the Bible, would it be considered bad luck to have one as a pet?
Thank you,
Answer:
People have domesticated most animals, although some are considered too dangerous to have as pets (Job 41:5). Just because you care for an animal, it doesn't mean it will develop feelings for you. Animals operate by instinct, and those instincts will kick in in various situations. Regardless of the pet you choose, you are responsible for its care and well-being. "A righteous man has regard for the life of his animal, but even the compassion of the wicked is cruel" (Proverbs 12:10).
You also need to understand that many people have fears of certain types of animals, such as spiders and snakes. Ensure that other people in your household are comfortable with you having this type of pet. Causing other people discomfort is not considerate of other people's feelings.
There is no prohibition against having a pet snake in the Bible.
