I lost my virginity to a prostitute and now I’m scared

Question:

I just recently had sex with a prostitute. I was a virgin, it was late at night, and I gave in.  I am deeply afraid of my salvation status. I am trying to follow God, but this sin is a big one, especially with the verses in Proverbs of this sin leading to death and never regaining the paths to life.

I am terribly scared and do not know what to do. This happened about 5 hours ago, and I have spent the last two hours crying and pleading my case to God, begging for forgiveness. I need the wisdom of a righteous man to comfort me since it's hard only relying on God.  I even reached out to my favorite Christian rappers begging for them to hear me out in this rough part of my life.

Please let me know if you can help. I know that God forgives all sins. I was born-again; however, I committed this sin.  Can I still have salvation? I'm deeply worried and scared with the multiple verses in Proverbs and throughout the Bible that say I can't.

Please help.

Answer:

You are confusing dealing with unrepentant sin and warnings regarding how hard it is to stop certain sins with the idea of permanence.

Right now you are sorry for what you did because you are scared of the consequences. That is a start, but the real question is whether you will give up this sin. "Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter" (II Corinthians 7:9-11). In other words, are you willing to turn yourself around so completely that later in life no one could ever imagine that you had sex with a prostitute? If so, then God forgives sins like these. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (I John 1:9). (This assumes you actually have fully become a Christian, not just in word, but also in what you have done. See: What Must I Do to Be Saved?)

"For the lips of an adulteress drip honey and smoother than oil is her speech; but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death, her steps take hold of Sheol. She does not ponder the path of life; her ways are unstable, she does not know it. Now then, my sons, listen to me and do not depart from the words of my mouth. Keep your way far from her and do not go near the door of her house, or you will give your vigor to others and your years to the cruel one; and strangers will be filled with your strength and your hard-earned goods will go to the house of an alien; and you groan at your final end, when your flesh and your body are consumed; and you say, "How I have hated instruction! And my heart spurned reproof! I have not listened to the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to my instructors! I was almost in utter ruin In the midst of the assembly and congregation"" (Proverbs 5:3-14).

Notice the last statement is not one of permanent ruin, but one that came close to complete ruin. In other words, there is a possibility of turning back. The warning is that continuing to have sex with immoral women will lead to bitterness, loss of health, early death, poverty, and misery -- especially when you realize that you didn't have to go this route. And we haven't even begun to consider the impact it has on your spiritual condition. "Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding; he who does so destroys his own soul" (Proverbs 6:32).

The problem with sexual sins is that there is a strong compulsion to repeat them. "For a harlot is a deep pit and an adulterous woman is a narrow well. Surely she lurks as a robber, and increases the faithless among men" (Proverbs 23:27-28). The point is that it is easy to fall into sexual sins, but it is very hard to get back out of them.

Along with changing your spiritual state, you need to go to a health clinic and get yourself tested for sexually transmitted diseases. The probability of picking one or more up from a prostitute is very high.

Question:

Thank you so much for your fast response. I'm really troubled by this. I am going to repent and try to live the best religious life for God, even though I know it is not through works so that no one should boast. I just feel obligated to now.

Thank you for the Proverbs 5:14 verse. Do you really think God can forgive me for this and all my other sins if I turn away and try my hardest to never repeat them? It's going to be hard, so please pray for me if you have the time. I am going to try my absolute hardest to give up all forms of sexual sin and instead read the Bible or pray to God whenever I get an urge to sin.

One verse that helps me sometimes is I Corinthians 5:13 "Expel the wicked man from among you" Although I believe I took it out of context, it sometimes helps me.

If you have any more wisdom to share with me regarding this please do. It's scary sometimes thinking that God will not forgive me.

Answer:

The problem has never been whether God can or will forgive. The problem has always been whether the sinner will leave his sin. "Behold, the LORD'S hand is not so short that it cannot save; nor is His ear so dull That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear" (Isaiah 59:1-2).
