I can’t find anyone near my age who hasn’t been divorced

Question:

My question is in regard to Matthew 5:32:

"But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery."

I am in my forties and have never married. There were times throughout my life that dating and marriage were not even on my mind due to life circumstances that I was going through (financial problems due to extended unemployment, underemployment, etc.) But now that my life circumstances are improving, I would like to find a wife. The only problem, every single woman I know within 10 years of my age (including those I know at church) has been divorced. If it would be a sin to marry a woman who is divorced, and I don't know any around my age that are not, should I give up hope of finding a wife?

Answer:

You left out the exception clause. Jesus did not say you could not marry someone who has been divorced. He said that a person divorced for reasons other than fornication cannot marry another.

If you cannot find a suitable spouse among those you know, the only answer is to expand the number of people you know to make the odds of finding someone more favorable.
