“How Much More” – The God Who Cares

by David Gibson

More than once, Jesus used a telling phrase that beautifully conveys how much God truly cares about us.

  • “. . . which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:9-11).
  • And a man was there with a withered hand. And they asked him, ‘Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?’—so that they might accuse him. He said to them, ‘Which one of you who has a sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! . . . . Then he said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ And the man stretched it out, and it was restored, healthy like the other” (Matthew 12:10-13).
  • Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! . . . . But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!” (Luke 12:24, 28).

From this, we learn:

  • Our Father responds to His children’s requests far more readily than earthly fathers do for their own. This is an encouragement to pray!
  • God shows more compassion for human suffering than the legalistic Pharisees, who valued a sheep over a person. So we must guard against misplaced priorities.
  • If God cares for His lesser creatures, how much more for those made in His image? And how much, much more those who the blood of His Son has purchased?

So why worry?

Now, doesn’t that make you feel better?
