How many children did Abraham have?

Question:

How many children did Abraham have?

Answer:

Abraham had a son, named Ishmael, by his wife's maid, Hagar, whom he had taken as a concubine (a servant who was also a wife) (Genesis 16:3-4). However, since he was not the child promised to Abraham and Sarah, he was not allowed to inherit (Genesis 17:18-21).

Abraham then had his promised son, Isaac, with his wife Sarah (Genesis 21:1-3).

Many years later, after his wife Sarah died, Abraham married a woman named Keturah (Genesis 25:1). To Abraham and Keturah were born six sons: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. As with Hagar, Keturah was a concubine and not a full wife, so they did not receive an inheritance (Genesis 25:6).
