How do I get out of a forced marriage?

Question:

I was forcefully married; there was no court wedding. Now, I no longer want the marriage. What do I do?

Answer:

A statement doesn't establish the truth. You said you were forced into marriage, but you didn't say how this oddity happened. You even imply that you had in the past accepted the marriage, but something recently caused you to change your mind.

Governments do not make marriages. They regulate marriages and provide a depository for the records of marriage, but that is the most they can do. That a marriage did not take place in a court doesn't say whether a marriage took place or not. A marriage is made by a covenant. "Yet she is your companion and your wife by covenant" (Malachi 2:14).

Rewriting history is not the way to solve a problem. Marriages work because two people work together at solving the problems they face. Given what you have said, you need to work on your marriage instead of seeking a loophole to exit it.
