How do I find a church?

Question:

Hello,

I really want to become a Christian and be saved, but my problem is finding the right church. By the way, to whomever this is going to, I found this website and don't know how I have forgotten but I love it. I started to cry and I cry all the time when I'm reading anything about the Lord. I realized I have sinned many times. I was thinking about becoming a lesbian and actually have lusted after one before and wondered what it was like to even sleep with one. As I read the topics on the website I cried my eyes out. No longer am I with this girl. I broke it off last year because y she caused me great chaos. Anyway, do you mind giving me any opinion about this church? I really want to go to a church that speaks of the truth and only the truth. [web site given]

Thanks and hope to hear from whomever this is being sent to.

Answer:

I admire that you have come so far and desire to worship God in truth. Truth isn't defined by what people say, how many attend, or even how it makes you feel. Truth is a fixed commodity. "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth" (John 17:17). This means you need to do some homework on your part. You can't take someone's word for it -- even my own. You need to be like the Bereans, "These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so" (Acts 17:11). The reason I cite Scripture so heavily on this site is that it is God who establishes the truth and I want people to be able to look for themselves to see if the things taught are so (I Peter 4:11).

You won't find what you are looking for among the denominations. Each modifies the Gospel in their own way to suit themselves. "I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ" (Galatians 1:6-10). To find a good church, you have to find one that stays with the Bible without any additions or modifications.
