How can I know that God has forgiven me?
Question:
How can I know that God has truly forgiven me? And how can I be sure I’m now free to move forward without needing to return?
Answer:
Paul tells us that God cannot lie -- not will not lie, or sometimes doesn't lie, God is not capable of lying (Titus 1:2). It is God who stated, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (I John 1:9). Do you believe God? Becoming a Christian is a statement that you, as an individual, have put your complete confidence in God. Do you then stumble over your unbelief? Look at I John 1:9 again and notice that John said, "God is faithful." God is completely trustworthy. He keeps His promises. However, you have to show that you trust Him. You have to have faith in God. As Jesus told Thomas, "Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed" (John 20:29).
