Do you know of any good books on how we got our Bible?

Question:

You know of any good books on how we got our Bible and why we leave certain books out? I have two people who want to know a good book about this. I have read how we got our books, but I don't have those books anymore. I can't remember as it has been such a long time.

Answer:

My favorite book on this topic is Inspiration and Canonicity of the Bible by L. Harris. It is out of print, but it is a good book if you can find a copy. Neil Lightfoot's How We Got the Bible is easier to read, but still a good source. One I haven't read, but which looks good is Making of the New Testament: Origin, Collection, Text and Canon by Authur Patzia.

For something online, try The Canon and Extra-Canonical Writings.

For some things that I have written, try:

Can We Trust the Text of the Bible?
The New Testament Canon
Canon of the Old Testament (Part 1)
Canon of the Old Testament (Part 2)
The Apocrypha
The Book of Enoch
The Prison Letters
