Can parents annul their daughter’s marriage?
Question:
Please Minister,
Can it be right for a parent to annul the marriage of their daughter based on disrespectful behavior shown toward them by their son-in-law? Can a married woman divorce her husband based on the same reason?
Answer:
A marriage covenant is between a husband and wife (Matthew 19:4-6). Parents are not a part of the covenant, so they cannot end a marriage regardless of the reason.
People divorce for all sorts of poor reasons, but it doesn't mean God is happy about it (Malachi 2:16). The only reason for divorce that allows for remarriage is because the spouse is committing fornication (Matthew 19:9). A divorce for any other reason means the person cannot marry again unless it is to reconcile with his spouse (I Corinthians 7:10-11).
