Can I ask God for help in finding a wife?

Question:

Would it be proper to go to God in prayer and ask for help in leading you to the right person to marry? This of course would be someone you have not met, and you are well aware of God's requirements for a godly and eligible person.

Answer:

"Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us" (I John 5:19).

Marriage is something in accordance with God's will; therefore, it is perfectly proper to ask God for aid in finding a wife.

While not a direct search, Abraham's servant was sent to find a wife for Abraham's son, Isaac. The servant's prayer was: "Then he said, "O LORD God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. Behold, here I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say, 'Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink' -let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master" " (Genesis 24:12-14).

The servant showed wisdom in his request. The actions he looked for are indications of an admirable character. A woman carrying a water jug shows someone who is strong and healthy. It also shows she is industrious. Giving a drink to a stranger who asks shows kindness. Offering drinks to the rest of the travelers and watering the camels until they are satisfied shows a person who is not afraid of hard work and who is willing to go the extra mile. Ten camels after a long journey will drink a large quantity of water. All the events were not likely to happen without the Lord's intervention on behalf of the servant.

But notice too that the servant didn't sit in Canaan, prayed to find a wife for Isaac, and then expected God to do everything. He went to Haran where other worshipers of God were known to live. He knew the criteria which he was looking for. He was even prepared to fail if he could not find the right quality of woman (Genesis 24:8).

If you are interested in marriage, pray for help in locating a good woman and the wisdom to recognize her when you find her. Then get busy looking for someone.
