Are there five doctrines of angels?
Question:
I told someone in our Bible study recently that "eternal security" is a doctrine. She said no, that doctrines are doctrines of angels, about five or so in number. What do you think about this?
Answer:
Doctrine means "teachings." "For I give you good doctrine: Do not forsake my law" (Proverbs 4:2). There is no passage that indicates that there are only five doctrines. Nor does the doctrine of the New Testament come from angels. "Jesus answered them and said, "My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone wants to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority" (John 7:16-17).
"Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them" (Romans 16:17).
"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables" (II Timothy 4:3-4).
