Will God give me my heart’s desire?
Question:
I prayed to God to show me my future wife and he did. He showed me a dream. After a while, I asked Him to interpret the dream and He sent an angel to me in a dream. The angel looked like a normal human and had no wings or white clothes. He said, "Your first wife is going to die."
Then, I remembered all the dreams and it made sense. I saw my first wife and she was sitting upon a rock. Then, my life turned into a desert and then I saw my second wife, she was all smiling. The marriage took place in a desert.
The day I got the dream, I asked God to prove that it was Him. So that day I read the Bible and I got Proverbs 31, the wife of noble character. I don't know which one of these two women is a wife of noble character.
But if I pray to God to not kill my first wife and let me spend my life with her, then will He grant my desire? I really don't want my first wife to die, I want to spend my life with her. Besides, I am not married now, I am only a teenager!
Answer:
"God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds" (Hebrews 1:1-2).
While an interesting dream, I cannot accept that it was from God since God said He would no longer deal with mankind directly. Turning to a passage in the Bible is not proof that God was communicating directly with you. Instead, it is treating your Bible as if it was an Ouija board.
God does direct us through the good news of His Son -- our Bibles. It gives us everything we need to live life and to be godly. "Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust" (II Peter 1:2-4). You don't need a special revelation because all that you need to know has already been revealed.
For example, you mention Proverbs 31. It wasn't written to confirm your dream. It was written to instruct you regarding how to recognize a woman who will make a fantastic wife. God teaches you so that you can make a good choice, but in doing so, God requires that you make your own choice.
Nor does God tell us the future of our individual lives. He did for a few people in the days He interacted directly with mankind, but even then those revelations were rare. Most people did not know their future.
God does interact with His people, helping them through life. But He has chosen to deal with men in a providential way, working behind the scenes that our faith might be stronger. See The Providence of God.
Rather than chase after fantasies, or live your life in dread because of a dream, learn to be a devoted follower of Christ. "Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me"" (John 14:23-24). You have Jesus' commandment in your Bible. Learn them. Follow them. And then God will be with you and helping you through life.
