What was the church used for in the 14th century besides religious activities?

Question:

In the 14th century in Europe, apart from religious activities what did the public and nobles use the church for?

Answer:

My first inclination was to dismiss the question since it wasn't biblically based, but I realized there is a small point that should be made. The question, from a biblical viewpoint, is inaccurate because the church is the people, not a place or a building. The Greek word ekklesia, which is translated as "church" in English, means the called out. It refers to the fact that Christians are called out of the world. "But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light" (I Peter 2:9). People can be called out but not buildings.
