What does “countenance” mean?

Question:

Genesis 4:4 says, "and Cain was very angry and his countenance fell." Is countenance holiness? Does this scripture mean that anger can cause us to lose our holiness?

Answer:

"Countenance" is your facial expression. "His countenance fell" is another way of saying he started frowning.

Question:

Numbers 6:24-26 says, "may the countenance of God come upon you." Can you help me understand this scripture?

Answer:

"The LORD bless you, and keep you;
The LORD make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you;
The LORD lift up His countenance on you, and give you peace
" (Numbers 6:24-26).

Verse 24 states the desire that God grant you happiness and protection, especially from sin. Verse 25 expresses the desire that God smiles upon you and be kind to you, especially in terms of granting salvation from sin (Job 29:24; Psalms 4:6; Proverbs 16:15). Verse 26 desires for God to notice you, look at you with favor, and give you peace, especially a clear conscience (Psalms 33:18).

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7).

Response:

So beautiful. I love this.
