Sin as a Practice
by Terry Wane Benton
"We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him. We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one" (I John 5:18-19).
Those truly related to God don't excuse sin and practice it. When they occasionally sin, they go right to the Advocate, confess their sin, and get the dirt washed away (I John 1:7-9). They don't like sin because it is not characteristic of the Holy God they live for. They confess regularly because they want to be cleansed regularly and do not seek to justify themselves in practicing any particular sin. They are not under the sway of the wicked one because they have a different attitude toward God, sin, and regularly cleansing themselves with the blood of Christ in regular appeals to their Advocate (I John 2:1-2).
