Quiet and Dignified

by Chadwick Brewer

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way” (I Timothy 2:1-2).

Today’s popular culture encourages us to do anything but lead quiet, godly, and dignified lives. Today's culture encourages:

  • Loud and brash people
  • Flashy and gaudy clothing
  • Doing foolish things and being foolish to get attention.
  • Living in front of a camera and doing whatever will get praise, fame, acceptance, and prosperity.

God calls us out of this world to be separate, holy, and devoted to Him. We are to be different from the world around us. We are to pray that we can live lives that are:

  • Peaceful: where we are peaceable and peacemaking while unharmed by others around us.
  • Godly: in which we follow God’s will and not society mores
  • Quiet: not making things about us. Not self-promoting. Not attention seeking.
  • Dignified: respectable. We represent the King as his children. We are to bring Him honor and glory by our actions.

Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord…” (II Corinthians 6:17).
