Is using the names of the week wrong?
Question:
I've been reading your posts and finding them really helpful. Thanks for sharing your insights!
I'm having a discussion with someone about the names of the days of the week. They argue that using names like Sunday and Saturday is unbiblical because they're named after gods.
They also claim that we worship every day, not just Sunday, and cited Romans 14.
I'd love your thoughts on this. Could you help me respond to their arguments?
Answer:
Some of the names of the week may have originated in the names of idols, but that connection has long since been lost. Billions of people who have no connection with idolatry use the names to indicate days of the week, not idols. To make an appointment on Tuesday doesn’t cause anyone to assume that you are a pagan. "... we know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one. For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him" (I Corinthians 8:4-6). For Christians (and the vast majority of the world), the weekday names are nothing more than names.
