Does John 14:26 apply to Christians today?

Question:

Hi Jeff,

Does John 14:26 apply to Christians today? If not, why?

Thanks.

Answer:

"These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you" (John 14:25-26).

First, we need to understand the verse in the context it was given. The speaker is Jesus (John 13:38). The "you" refers back to Jesus' disciples, the apostles, who were with Him after the Last Supper and before his arrest (John 13:22,36; 14:5,8,22). Notice that the promise is to bring to the apostles remembrance of all the things that Jesus said to the apostles. You and I were not with Jesus while he was on earth. We have no memories of the events to be reminded of them. The verses that follow are also specific to the apostles who are about to witness Jesus' arrest and death.

So while this is not a promise to send the Holy Spirit to Christians today to bring a remembrance of things they had not witnessed, it is still a critical verse. It tells us that the apostles were inspired by God. The things written were not based on fallible human memory, but were made accurate and precise by the working of God. Thus, we can rely on their writings to tell us what Jesus wants us to do in this present age.
