Do I have to give my father a proper burial?

Question:

Where does it say "honoring your father" means even to go as far as giving him a proper burial when he dies?

Answer:

"Then the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, "The men of Jabesh Gilead were the ones who buried Saul." So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, "You are blessed of the LORD, for you have shown this kindness to your lord, to Saul, and have buried him. And now may the LORD show kindness and truth to you. I also will repay you this kindness, because you have done this thing"" (II Samuel 2:4-6).

As David noted, seeing that someone is buried after death is a way of showing kindness. "Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:19-21). In death, your dad is no longer around to hurt you, and in this one small act, you can show people that he did not destroy the good that is in you.
