Did Jesus go to Hell?

The idea comes from a poor choice of words selected by the translators of the King James Version of the Bible. "He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption" (Acts 2:31). The New King James Version is better, "He, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption" (Acts 2:31).

The translators of the King James Version rendered both the Greek words gehenna and hades as "hell." Only once did they translate hades as "grave" in I Corinthians 15:55, which is an accurate translation of the word because hades means the grave or the realm of the dead.

Jesus died and went to the grave, but nothing in the New Testament actually states he went to hell. Instead, Jesus said to the thief on the cross, "And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise" (Luke 23:43).
