Even a Caveman Can Do It

by Zeke Flores

Remember the old insurance commercials that claimed to be so simple, "even a caveman can do it"?

We had become so “politically correct” that no one wants to insult anyone else, so Geico came up with a victim they were sure we could poke fun at with impunity, since there are no cavemen around, or so they thought! The ad featured a hairy, bearded caveman offended at the implication that he’s not smart. I thought the commercials were hilarious and used the phrase to refer to a slew of things that anyone ought to be able to do, including Christianity.

I marvel at the amazing plan of God and its simplicity that, if someone were humble enough and really wanted to, they could be saved. The plan itself is not hard to figure out:

  • Man sins;
  • Man needs a way to reconcile with God.
  • God provides a way through His Son;
  • Man accepts God’s way;
  • Man is saved.

In fact, the Bible says that God’s will is revealed in such a way that the unsophisticated can grasp it (Matthew 11:25; I Corinthians 1:20, 26). So, why are so many people, including many religious people, lost? That’s the million-dollar question.

For man, accepting God’s way of salvation boils down to one thing: obedience. Sounds easy, right? Just do what God says. And it is easy, until you realize that obedience means humility, a submission of will, and a real desire to do it God’s way instead of what “I” think is OK.

So, many people, believing God couldn’t possibly condemn them because they’re moral, decent, and religious, opt to “do” Christianity their way instead of submitting their hearts and lives to God. And the sad fact is, they’ll be eternally lost.

Obedience is a big deal with God. So big, in fact, that even His perfect Son had to obey Him (Philippians 2:8, Hebrews 5:8). Jesus obeyed, not because He needed saving, but because we needed a clear example of what obedience –real submission to God– looks like.

So while Christianity is so simple that even a caveman can do it, God isn’t looking for cavemen. He’s looking for men and women who will just submit their stubborn wills to Him and simply obey.

"Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation" (Hebrews 5:8-9).
