You Matter to God
by Zeke Flores
Remember the old song: "What's it all about, Alfie?" (Yeah, I'm showing my age) I don't know about Alfie, but people still ask themselves the question in different ways:
- "Why am I here?"
- "Where am I going?"
- "Do I matter?"
People seek significance and meaning for their lives in what they do and what they pursue. The thing is, none of the old standbys really satisfies. Money, prestige, power - they all might give a sliver of short-lived satisfaction but ultimately leave you unfulfilled. So, the questions come, "What’s it all about? Do I even matter?"
In a word, yes. You matter because you matter to God. But your significance is not in what you achieve, at least not as far as our culture's standards are concerned. Your significance lies in fulfilling your purpose. You were created to honor and glorify your Creator, and that gives you more of a sense of real purpose and significance than any pile of money or any social position. The purpose of life is a life of purpose.
"And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified" (Romans 8:28-30).
