Where Do Your Morals Come From?
by Terry Wane Benton
What is wrong all over the news in our country is that we shoved even mentioning God out of public life, and that leads to a decline in governing yourself with moral accountability. Take accountability to God out of your picture, and nobody has the right to tell you what to do. Not parents, not teachers, not the police! We’ve allowed ourselves to get hoodwinked into the notion that the universe got started without God, does not need God, and neither do we.
With that foundation of indoctrination, where would moral decisions of right and wrong come from? Each person creates their own rules, and that is the reason for the anarchy that flourishes within a family, a city, or a nation.
The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge (Proverbs 1:7), and without that beginning point, you find no self-motivation to hold yourself accountable and answerable to anyone. Failing to seek God and teach our children to seek God is setting out on dangerous waters without a sail, compass, or rudder. It never ends well! Seek God, grope for Him, and find Him (Acts 17:21ff). That gives you purpose and direction, and then you start to see reasons to treat others with love and respect. More importantly, you set a definite course to obtain the great rewards God has promised to the faithfully obedient.
