Will we be judged by everything we say here on earth?

Question:

What does it mean we will be judged by one day by every word we have spoken here on earth? Does it mean that by just haven spoken something bad that those words will condemn us at judgment then even if we have repented of it?

Answer:

"A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned" (Matthew 12:35-37).

The things that you say reflect who you are inside. Our hearts are not just shown by the things we carefully consider and talk about. It is the casual things that we say, the things we blurt out without much thought, which are more revealing of the type of person we are inside.

Jesus is warning that we will give an account for all that we say, not just the important speeches that we make. And by all, that would include things we said in repentance for the wrongs we committed earlier. God doesn't just focus on the bad that people have done. "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad" (II Corinthians 5:10). Therefore, a word misspoke will be judged, but it will also be weighed against the fact that you repented of what you said.
