Survey of the Bible - Deuteronomy
Text: Deuteronomy 6:4-9
I. The book of Deuteronomy is the last book in the section of the Old Testament that is known as the Law
A. This book is mostly a collection of four sermons which Moses presented to the people just before he died and before they people entered the land of Canaan.
1. It covers a period of time of just five weeks.
B. The name Deuteronomy is from the Septuagint title, which means “second law.” It is a recap of the laws God had given Israel
1. The Hebrew name for this book means “These be the words.”
2. You must remember that those who heard the original law, given at Mount Sinai, had mostly died in the wilderness. Only Moses, Joshua and Caleb are left and Moses is about to die.
3. This recap serves as a reminder to the new generation and gave this people an opportunity to commit themselves to God and His Law.
C. If you want to describe the content of the book in one word, “remember” is the best word to use as Moses uses it repeatedly throughout the book.
D. It was from Deuteronomy that Jesus quoted the Scriptures to defeat Satan - Deuteronomy 6:13, 16; 8:3
E. This is also the book which contains the greatest commandment - Deuteronomy 6:4
