What Does the Bible Say About Abortion?

The Murder of Humans Is Forbidden

  • Genesis 9:6 - "Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of God He made man."
  • Exodus 20:13 - "You shall not murder."
  • Proverbs 6:16-17 - "There are six things which the LORD hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: ... hands that shed innocent blood"

A Child in the Womb Is a Human

  • Genesis 25:21-22 - "Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived. But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If it is so, why then am I this way?" So she went to inquire of the LORD."
  • Psalms 139:13-16 - "For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them." (David existed prior to birth).
  • Isaiah 44:2 - "Thus says the LORD who made you and formed you from the womb, who will help you, 'Do not fear, O Jacob My servant; and you Jeshurun whom I have chosen.'"
  • Even secular science supports this view. See Life Before Birth

Is it morally permissible for one human needlessly to terminate the life of an innocent human based on that life being an inconvenience?

Are There Exceptions?

  • "Is abortion wrong except in the case of rape?"
  • What about incest or statutory rape? These are sins, but sins are never fixed by additional sins. "And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), "Let us do evil that good may come"? Their condemnation is just" (Romans 3:8).
  • Sins are corrected by turning them into something good. See For Such a Time as This.

It Is Not Your Body!

  • The argument is that since I am not the one dealing with pregnancy, I don't have the right to talk about the morality of abortion. See You're Not the Woman!
