Survey of the Bible: Exodus
Text: Hebrews 12:18-29
I. The book of Exodus takes its name from the primary story told within: The exit of the Children of Israel from the land of Egypt
A. The name comes from a transliteration of the name of the book in the Greek Septuagint
B. It is a book written by Moses and Moses is the central figure throughout the book
1. Attested to by Jesus - Mark 12:26 quoting Exodus 3:6
C. It begins over 400 years after Jacob and his family moved into Egypt (Exodus 12:40-41)
II. There are six main events
A. The Bondage of Israel - Exodus 1-2
1. Slavery - Exodus 1
2. The First 80 years of Moses Life - Exodus 2
B. The Deliverance of Israel - Exodus 3-12
1. The Call of Moses - Exodus 3-4
2. The Demand to Release Israel and Pharaoh’s Response - Exodus 5-6
3. The Ten Plagues - Exodus 7-12
C. The Initial Trial of Israel - Exodus 13-17
1. Crossing the Red Sea - Exodus 13-14
2. Journey through the Wilderness - Exodus 15-17
D. The Organizing of Israel - Exodus 18-31

2. The giving of the law - Exodus 19-24

III. Purpose
A. Defines who are the Israelites
1. Where they had come from and how they became a nation
2. Defines the type of people they are
a. Complainers - Exodus 16:2-3
b. Idolaters - Exodus 32:7-8
c. In other words, we still see men as sinners
B. Even heroes sin
1. Moses not circumcising his son - Exodus 4:24-26
2. Aaron making the idol - Exodus 32:1-6
C. The responsibility of sin - Exodus 32:31-35
1. The justice of God - Exodus 34:6-7
D. Shows that God can redeem a people for His own
1. Introduces the idea that a substitute is needed, the Passover lamb - Exodus 12:3-13
a. Unblemished with no bones broken
2. The bringing of Israel out of Egypt
3. The care of them by sending manna and bringing forth water
IV. Types Seen in Exodus - I Corinthians 10:1-4
A. The land of Egypt - A type of sin
1. In bondage - Micah 6:4; Romans 6:17-18
2. Saved - Jude 5
B. Pharaoh - A type of Satan
1. Counterfeit religion in the form of magicians who appeared to do some of the miracles – II Corinthians 11:14-15; II Thessalonians 2:9-12
C. The children of Israel - A type of the Christian
D. Moses - A type of Christ
1. Had wealth but chose poverty - Hebrews 11:24-25; II Corinthians 8:9
2. But Christ had the greater glory - Hebrews 3:1-6
3. Miracles to prove his message was from God
4. Brought to being a new law - Joshua 8:31-32; Galatians 6:2
E. The Passover - A type of the crucifixion
1. Christ is our Passover - I Corinthians 5:7
2. When the blood is seen, death passes over - Exodus 12:31; Ephesians 1:7
F. The Crossing of the Red Sea - A type of Baptism
1. Leaving sin - Romans 6:3-7
G. The building of the tabernacle – the importance in following the pattern - Exodus 25:40; Hebrews 8:5-6
